LINE ART

 LINE ART

Line art or line drawing is any image that consists of distinct straight lines or curves placed against a background (usually plain), without gradations in shade (darkness) or hue (color) to represent two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects.

TECHNIQUES
Line art emphasizes forms and drawings, of several (few) constant widths (as in technical illustrations), or of freely varying widths (as in brush work or engraving). Line art may tend towards realism (as in much of Gustave Dore's work), or it may be a caricature, cartoonideograph, or glyph.

HISTORY

Before the development of photography and of halftones, line art was the standard format for illustrations to be used in print publications, using blackink on white paper. Using either stippling or hatching, shades of gray could also be simulated.

FUNCTIONS

Although their are various functions for using line art in your form of art which could be either used in portraits, sketches or sometimes in painting too .The 5 most important functions of line art are : identification, three-dimensional space, organization, movement, texture.

1] IDENTIFICATION FUNCTION

of a line refers to it’s most basic function of capturing the essence of the subject. Meaning, our brain is able to identify a few varying lines put together in a certain way as a human or an object

2] Three-dimensional function

of line is to provide a sense of space. Variation of a line in tonality, width, weight, focus and intensity is what allows for the effect to occur.

3]Organization function

of a line refers to the basic underdrawing (or sketch) for artwork in painting/drawing, as well as separating or grouping elements on a page in design.

4] Movement function

of a line refers to guiding the viewer’s eyes in the desired direction, as well as showing the movement of a subject.

5] Texture function

of a line is using different variations of a line to imply textures. For example, smooth texture is created with straight or curved unbroken lines, messy texture can be created by using a different tool, and fur textures are created with a specific pattern.

MY ART

VILLAGE LADY
This is a line art , which I basically dedicated to international women's day, which falls on 8th march every year to represent the power women hold in a society, irrespective of the fact that the women belong to the urban or the rural society in our country.

Here, I have used line art to present those emotions, the culture and the tradition of the ladies living in rural areas. Besides the fact of using Black and white color in the art  to represent the period or the old golden era, where women used to do 16 sringaar.

OLD MAN
This painting is representing an old man smoking a cigarette , where I have used the line art comprising of various horizontal and vertical lines to justify the art and also  I did shading  to highlight the basic features of the facial structure.

WITCHY HAT
This line art is presenting a witch hat which I basically got reference from a very famous series HARRY POTTER , where I used various shapes , patterns, lines to make the art look more bold and justifiable and also  I did shading to make it look more scarier.
